Our Guests said ...
'A wonderful and totally magical holiday...'
La Petite Gravelle is a tranquil haven deep in the Charentaise countryside yet within easy reach of many historic towns and magnificent beaches.
Everyone has fallen in love with the quiet charm of the Gite and the hamlet.
'Charlie' and 'William' appear quite often in the earlier comments. Charlie was our friendly old ginger cat who could detect the merest thought of a barbeque. Sadly he died in December 2014, just a few weeks short of his 21st birthday. We also lost William, a characterful Yorkie, but there is a new arrival - see our Pets page.
Dear Mike and Maria - we do not want to go home! Thank you for another wonderful week in your lovely Gite.
is what we have been looking for - quiet and relaxing, so nice to be
away from the hustle and bustle of the UK; to wake up to the sound of
the odd cocerell calling his ladies; to be able to sit outside in the
evenings enjoying a glass (or two) of wine; being entertained by the
birds feeding and the doves romancing eachother. This place is heaven!
See you in October.
N&L, March 2016 and May 2016
A lovely relaxing stay in a lovely Gite. A very warm welcome from Mike and Maria and then as much peace as we could ever have hoped for. Thank you La Petite Gravelle for a wonderful and restful stay - oh, and the delicious hens' eggs!
N&S, Edinburgh, Decenber 2015/January 2016
What a wonderful week we have had in Charente Maritime. Thank you Mike and Maria for the wonderful stay in La petite Gravelle, we couldn't have wanted better - beautifully simple and welcoming.
Why eat out when you can cook and enjoy the wonderful evening sunshine in the courtyard - the view was wonderful too. We visited all the major and minor places and can see why other guests have visited more than once.
A&J, October 2015
The Gite is lovely and so nicely decorated. We have had a very relaxing week here and enjoyed every minute.
There are so many interesting places to visit from here. A favourite was Saintes and we also loved la Rochelle. What an amazing place! Other places within a short drive are St Jean d'Angély, Pons, Rochefort and Matha. We had great weather all week, with some pleasant sunny days.
Mike and maria are a lovely couple, very friendly and helpful and easy to get on with. The flowers, eggs and a bottle of wine were a lovely welcoming touch. It was nice meeting Bobby and Heidi too.
Thank you Maria and Mike for a lovely relaxing stay in a gorgeous gite.
S&A, New Zealand, October 2015
Quiet and relaxing, the perfect lazy holiday spot. We love the cottage which Mike and Maria have restored and furnished beautifully. They are excellent hosts, always available to give advice or have a chat but never intrusive. Our greatest delight has been sitting n the loo while being seranaded by sparrows whose chirps come in through the bathroom airvent!
C&B, October 2015
We were here to celebrate a big family birthday, 23 of us from England, France, Bemuda, Hungary and Austria, and have had a wonderful time.
With eight children under eight it was wonderful to have La Petite Gravelle to which to retreat!
It has been perfect for us, and Mike and Maria have been amazing hosts - nothing too much trouble and so kind and patient with the children giving them all a precious egg for their last brakfast. Collecting their own fresh egs was a new experience for them and although they may forget the cathedrals and chateaux they will not forget 'the girls', Bobby and Heidi!
Our second visit and just as perfect as our first. It is such a relaxing place to be, the Gite and surrounding countryside are beautiful.
J&L, Somerset, July/August 2015
We have driven through and visited some lovely towns and villages, we enjoyed the history of Tusson and Ligné and the mix of old and new that is Anguleme, and Cognac and Rochefort are not to be missed.
What better way to end an enjoyable if sometimes tiring day than with a glass of wine or two in 'William's Field' surrounded by the chickens.
Mike and Maria are the perfect hosts and go the extra mile to make sure you have the most relaxing idyllic holiday ever! Now looking forward to our next visit.
A&D, Lancs, June/July 2015
We have thoroghly enjoyed our holiday in beautiful Charente Maritime. Mike and Maria could not have been more welcoming and friendly hosts and the Gite was ideal.
We particularly rnjoyed the evening chats and drinks in 'William's Field' as the sun went down watching Ludo and Bobby having a mad time chasing each other until they were exhausted. The local information and advice you gave us was invaluable.
What a beautiful place, the Gite is perfect in every way and in the most georgeous setting.
Thank you for the wine and the eggs, very much appreciated. Also thank you for the introduction to Les Remparts (our favourite restaurant in Saintes - M&M). That was a night to remember, we ate so much we ached.
We will remember this holiday with very fond memories. Perfect place and perfect hosts.
C&R, May 2015
What a lovely Gite set in a fantastic area of peace and quiet. The Gite is fitted out perfectly with every conceivable need and done with loving care.
Mike and Maria are both lovely people and their local knowledge a great help in getting around. Thanks for the wine and home-made chocolates, they were delicious.
P&D, Uttoxeter, 0ctober/November 2014
A lovely Gite in a quiet spot. A perfect place to have a relaxing two weeks with lots of places to visit.Thank you Mike and Maria for a fabulous break. You are perfect hosts and the Gite is a credit to you.
Hi, I'm Polo the Westie who also had a great time playing with William and Heidi
N&S (and Polo), Shropshire, October 2014
Having read all the previous entries what more could I possibly add! Just a thank you. I wanted to come away somewhere to put myself back together and I found it here. Hope to see you again, take care.
P, September/October 2014
A special place to stay with fantastic hosts just next door! What more could you ask for in a relaxing holiday. We have throroughly enjoyed ourselves in this beautifully presented Gite in a delightful location.
Angoulème was great! We recommend it - Circuits des Remparts was a pleasure and we will return.
C&S, Buckinghamshire, September 2014C&S were here for our Circuits des Remparts special - covering the
classic motoring event at Angouleme. They have since
returned to settle in Charente Maritime
A&P are two of our oldest friends, but we'll let them have their say about their stay anyway...!
P has known Mike for over 50 years, I have known him for over 40 and we've known Maria for over 20 years so we are not surprised by the lovely comments earlier in this book - which we fully endorse! We first met Charlie as a kitten and William as a puppy! We are delighted to see them all settled so happiliy in France with such a lovely home and Gite. Thank you for the lovely trips especially to La Rochelle and Saintes (do not miss the amphitheatre!). We will recommend the Gite to all our friends and hope to come again soon.
A&P, West Mersea, September 2014
Well it seems that when you choose to holiday in a tiny Gite in the middle of rural France, away from everything and everyone - you meet the nicest people!
Thanks again for a wonderful and relaxing week and for introducing us to your friends. Take care of yourselves and all of your pets, we will see you again next year.
Thank you Mike and Maria for a perfect two-week stay at your beautiful Gite. It was everything you could possibly need and you are the perfect hosts. Friendly, welcoming and ever ready to offer help and advice on where to go, how to get there and what to see. The lovely eggs, delicious chocolates and jam and the home-grown vegetables and bottle of wine were much appreciated and all go to show how much thought you have in offering a perfect holiday.
We have visited some lovely places and particularly liked a picnic by the river at St Savien and a leisurely drive to La Tremblade and thn down the Cote Sauvage towards Royan. For a change of pace La Rochelle is a great place for people watching.
We leave with lots of wonderful memores and smiles of William half-heartedly chasing chickens at Sundowner-time and Heidi raising her paw for her treat. The hundreds of photos we have taken will help us through the winter months!
A&D, Lancashire, July/August 2014
(A&D have already booked for 2015 - M&M)
A beautiful 'get away from it all' quiet corner of this beautiful part of France. With a picture-perfect Gite with everything that is required for a relaxing time.
Thank you Mike and Maria for your hospitality and gifts of wine and eggs, also the chocolates... divine!
C&M, Derby, July 2014
Had a wonderful time from the moment we stepped inside the beautiful Gite, which had everything one could possibly need. Mike and Maria were terrific hosts and the welcome pack was a lovely thought and much appreciated. The chocs, handmade by Maria, were superbly decadent and truly scrumptious!
We enjoyed many trips to surrounding places of interest, including Cognac where we took the tour at Hennessy and enjoyed a sample. Another favourite was La Rochelle where we drove to the Port des Minimes and took the Bus de Mer to La Rochelle. The market in St Jean d'Angély on Wednesday and Saturday mornings is well worth a visit for fresh produce etc. Angoulème is a city with many fine old buildings, with lots of nice places to eat. we also enjoyed visiting many of the different beaches.
We leave with many happy memories. Many thanks.
D&S, Yorkshire, June 2014
Absolutely perfect! In every way our week here has been just what we needed, an idyllic setting with a wonderfully equiped and pretty little Gite.
Mike and Maria you are perfect hosts - so friendly and generous and we hope to see you again soon. Thank you for everything (especially the chocolates!)
C&B, Gloucestershire, May 2014
We have stayed in the Gite for the second of our two-week house-hunting trip to the Charente Maritime area.
As well as the house-hunting bit, as potential Gite owners ourselves, we have picked up a lot of best practices about how they should be run.
We have loved the little touches at la Petite Gravelle, the egg-cup covers, the candles and the lovely welcome pack of wine, eggs and Maria's delicious cherry and cognac jam. As well of course as the essentials to make the stay comfortable and relaxing.
We may be locals ourselves in the not too distant future , however we would not hesitate to recommend to our friends as this has been a wonderful week. Many thanks!
M&C, Bushey, May 2014
I knew what I was going to write in this book, but when I started looking through everyone before us had written what I wanted to say.
Mike and Maria are a fantastic couple and we feel as if we have known them for years, you can tell that everyone who stays here feels the same. If you have a problem they are so helpful and nothing is too much trouble. We will certainly be coming back.
S&K, Vancouver Island, March 2014
Thank you Mike and Maria for a lovely relaxing week in La Petite Gravelle. The cottage has everything that is needed for a perfect and comfortable holiday.
The surrounding countryside is beautiful with more wildlife than people. We had a mixture of bright sunny days and wet miserable days but still managed to go out every day visiting the local towns and villages and also walking down some of the country lanes nearby and then put the log burner on on our return for a cozy night in with some local wine and a nice hearty meal. Would love to come back some day in the warmer months to do a lot more exploring in this lovely area.
S&P (and Tom the cat), February 2014
We are currently renting in Normandy and although we thought that was where we wanted to buy but thought that a week in the Charente may be a nice break.
We looked on line and found this wonderful little cottage with wonderful hosts who said we could have this for a week and were able to bring our two dogs with us.
The cottage is perfection and every cupboard that we opened was full of everything we could ever need. Fresh eggs, candles and very nearly fresh chicken (the free-range chickens were a great test of the dogs' obedience!) were waiting for us on arrival.
The weather was not very kind and we were out everyday looking at property but were always pleased to get back here, light the fire, open the wine and cook a meal. Perfection.
R&L (and Bently and Amber), Normandy, January 2014
(R&L subsequently bought here in the Charente - M&M)
What a lovely Gite. Cozy and comfortable even in the middle of winter. Thank you Mike and Maria for our lovely welcome - red wine, fresh eggs and warm mince pies - what more could we ask for. We are lucky enough to live in France and came to explore a different area. Went to Angoulème, Cognac, Saintes, the Ile de Ré and of course St Jean d'Angély. All lovely.
Highlight was a picnic on the beach on the Ile de Ré on 2 January! Mike and Maria are wonderful hosts and we know that anyone reading this will think so too.
R&J, St Aulaye, December 2013/January 2014
Thank you both for a great time. We have had a great relaxing week and Spot and Patch (two lovely Jack Russels - M&M) thank you too. Thanks again for the gifts, the chocs were lush. Hope to see you both again soon.
G&K, Somerset, October 2013
We have enjoyed a relaxing break in this charming and comfortable Gite. We only wish we could have stayed for longer and hope to be back next Spring. Thank you for the delicious chocs and the eggs and wine.
B&G, Bolton, October 2013
This is our second holiday here and as expected just great again. Mike and Maria are such great people - thanks for all the gifts and warm welcome. Hope to come again.
D&S, Nottingham, September 2013
Our stay here has been very relaxing - the air must be very sleepy as we have slept soundly every night! Mike and Maria are great hosts, so thank you for your kindness and gifts. The weather was up and down with a couple of damp days which often cleared in the afternoon.
Once again thank you for a really enjoyable holiday.
P&B, Dorset, September 2013
Thank you for our stay and warm welcome to La Petite Gravelle. It was everything described to us, and more. We have seen some lovely places and tasted some excellent food. There is every chance we will be back again.
S&K, West Midlands, September 2013
We have enjoyed our stay at La Petite Gravelle; it was very relaxing in a beautiful little hamlet. The Gite is lovely - a perfect getaway in France. Lots to explore - lovely day in Saintes (lots of shops). Very hot weather!
Thank you so much for all the little extras - lovely eggs and chocs, plums, water and wine all on arrival. Thanks again for all your directions and help.
S&A, East London, August 2013
Having read the reviews on the website we were dubious as to their reliability - but on arrival found them to be absolutely true!
We have thoroughly enjoyed our week at La Petite Gravelle and found the accommodation to be perfect. We have loved the snapshot of rural French life and the welcome extended by Mike, Maria et al!
We would love to return and in the meantime leave with some very special memories. Thank you so much.
S&C, Plymouth, August 2013
Wonderful weather, lovely eggs and chocolates, lots of places to sit in sun or shade, comfortable, cool house, so many quiet roads and tracks to explore, beautiful stone buildings lovely day in Saintes and market in Aulnay.
T&A, Corwall, August 2013
Wonderful week, superb location, excellent cycling country. Top Tip - spend a day on the Ile de Ré and go cycling. Very warm welcome from Mike and Maria, lovely Gite, mixed weather but warm so not a problem.
A&E, Worcs, August 2013
After trawling the internet we discovered a region we hadn't explored before. The Charente - could this be the place for our retirement?
After one week here we are sold on the idea. The pretty countryside dotted with lovely villages. The quiet roads but still far from some excitement (Saintes, Cognac, La Rochelle). The people have been extremely welcoming and helpful - just the thing when your French is a little rusty.
Most of all, Mike and Maria have been fantastic hosts, eager to pass on their wealth of knowledge. We have been very comfortable at La Gravelle, we're quite taken with the hens and may even get some ourselves. We've heard the cuckoo every day and watched lizards outside basking in the sun. The evenings here are lovely, warm until quite late. It's nice to come back after a long day of walking or driving to sit and listen to the sounds of the countryside. Thanks for everything.
S&A, Yorkshire, June 2013
How many times have you dreampt of being in a lovely gite in a beautiful location meeting fantastic people? La Petite Gravelle and Mike and Maria are a real dream come true. Our second visit here and the stress of normal life just disappears as you walk through the door. The weather hasn't been that kind this visit but perfection very often has a small flaw! Hopefully see you all very soon.
T&L, Instow, May 2013
We've had a fantastic week revisiting the region.... many thanks for the welcoming gifts and interesting conversation. We also enjoyed the menagerie.... we loved listening to the chickens, doves and cuckoo. We hope to be back again soon.
C&J, Buckingham, May 2013
Thank you for another great week. The gite is such a peaceful and calming place to be. You would make a fortune if you could bottle it! We really hope to see you again soon.
P&J, Hullbridge, April/May 2013
This is our second stay at La Petite Gravelle and we have spent another fabulous holiday. It was lovely to see the area at a different time of the year and to cosy up next to the roaring log burner with a glass of wine. Thanks for being as hospitable as ever. Can't wait for our next visit. Bye to the chickens, Heidi, William. Jpeg and Charlie - we'll miss you! See you all soon.
T&R, Stourbridge, March 2013
Many thanks Mike and Maria for a lovely stay in your Gite. We particularly welcomed your open-hearted generosity and the ease with which you welcome your guests. Very much just like home and we look forward to returning to this area in August. Very best wishes to you both.
J&K, Spain, February/March 2013We loved the Gite - so peacful and relaxing, perfect for our few nights stay and a great location to explore the surrounding area. Mike and Maria made us feel very much at home, so much so that we wouldn't be surprised if we ended up coming back next year with the new addition to our family and trying out the as yet unused cot here!
Thanks for a lovely stay.
D&R, Hampton Middlesex, October 2012
Without doubt the most relaxing, stress free holiday we have ever had. La Petite Gravelle just feels so welcoming as soon as you open the door and gets better and better the longer you are here. We kept fairly local with our week here and the markets at St Jean, Saintes and Cognac are a must for fantastic produce. Saintes is probably our favourite with plenty of history and just a beautiful setting. Thank you for a wonderful break. Hope to see you again very soon.
T&L, Instow Devon, September 2012
Every now and then you see something or visit a place that just makes you smile. La Petite Gravelle is that something. I usually take two weeks to fully relax, just in time to go home - here it happened immediately. Mike and Maria we can't thank you enough for your time and hospitality. Answering all our questions about moving to France must have driven you mad! (definately not, we can chat for hours about the quirks of French life! M&M) Your help was invaluable and has moved us a little bit closer to our dream.
P&J, Hullbridge, September 2012
For anyone looking to get a true taste of rural France in a quintessential French hamlet you will certainly not be disappointed on booking La Petite Gravelle. Mike and Maria have shown such warmth and generosity while providing accommodation that is impeccably clean, charming with everything you could possibly need and more. This, combined with the ducks, chickens, the sounds of cockadoodling, walks along the river, lazy lunches in French towns, good wine, delicious cheeses, bike rides along a backdrop of sunflower fields, Charlie the cat and three special pooches have made for a wonderful and totally magical holiday. Thank you for your hospitality, your recommendations and for always going that extra mile where thousands wouldn't. We have loved every minute.
T&R, Stourbrideg, September 2012
We have very much enjoyed our stay here. Thank you for all the recommendations for places to visit and being so warm and friendly. We would recommend this lovely house and area to our friends and family.
C&D, August 2012
Thank you for a great week in a beautiful area. It was lovely to meet the hens and dogs, and Charlie of course. The chats over a glass of wine in the evening sunshine was a bonus as was all the 'little extras' that kept appearing at the door! We have certainly made the most of our week, visiting the coast from Ile d'Oleron to Royan, Saintes, Cognac, St Jean d'Angély all of which were wonderful. We have cycled around the immediate area through fields of sunflowers, melons and vines and watched the wheat being harvested. Thank you very much for a superb Gite with everything you could wish for supplied. We will certainly be back.
C&M, St Agnes Cornwall, July 2012
Many thanks for such a warm welcome to La Petite Gravelle... our stay has been relaxing and enjoyable. St Jean is charming and historic for a potter and lunch, Saintes, Cognac,Rochefort, Rouillac, Ile d'Oleron, Angouleme La Rochelle and Ile de Ré are all worth a visit for the markets, towns and beaches. For a lazy afternoon stroll a nice walk around the local area is lovely rolling fields surround you and perhaps a tractor or two will pass you!
H&M, Bristol, June 2012

Whitstable. October 2011.
had marvellous week of relaxation here, thank you for your kindness
... It has been a wonderful time to visit rural France and we have
tested the produce of the locality - purchased in the market, from
you own garden and even picked from the verges! Our two excursions
were to Rochefort and Fouras and to Melle. We loved then both but
Melle held a real magic for us with its
amazing arboretum planted
along the old railway line.
Llanelli. August/September 2011
big thank-you for your welcome during my stay. It is a a marvellous
place for those looking for quiet, at the same time isolated but very
close to some marvellous towns.

A warm welcome for our arrival with the Christmas tree lit up, the log-burner alight and fresh eggs on the table. We will return with pleasure in good weather to appreciate this countryside in another season. We leave well rested and with a warm heart for all the kindness of Mike and Maria. Ne changez pas!
A&M, France. December 2010
was our first visit to this part of France and it will certainly not
be the last. Thanks
Mike and Maria for making us so welcome and providing such excellent
facilities. The cottage is just delightful and so lovely to come home
to after cycling or walking around the lanes. The log burner was
fantastic for those chilly evenings. The fresh eggs and veg were
really appreciated. It was lovely just to see the animals wandering
around - and Charlie could sense when the barbeque was going to be
lit! Once again thank you for all your kindness and see you again in
the not too distant future.
Whitstable. Late October 2010
We had a
lovely time here and many thanks for your kind hospitality. We hope
to visit again in May. P&D,
Kent. September 2010
you for such a wonderful stay... the Gite is so pretty (I
particularly liked the Laura Ashley mugs!) with everything you could
need in it. We visited some stunning places, in particular the Ile de
Ré with its beautiful beaches. We also enjoyed Cognac with its free
tasting session and a slightly tipsy walk around the town and river.
La Rochelle was also beautiful... St Jean d'Angely is lovely too,
lots of little shops and people taking part in the baguette-baton
race! All the best to you both, Charlie, the dogs, the ducks and
chickens. We had a lovely holiday - thank you.
Wales. August/September 2010
Gite is charming and comfortable, perfect for the peace and quiet we
needed to unwind after a stressful year at work. Charente Maritime is
a beautiful area with lots of charming villages to explore. We
enjoyed the walks and cycling routes and it is worth visiting the
main cities of the area - Saintes, Cognac, Royan, La Rochelle and
Rochfort for the history, architecture and leisurely lunches! The
highlight of the holiday was cycling the bridge to Ile de Ré ... I
will have 'sore bits' to remind me for days to come. The island is
beautiful and worth visiting by car, foot or bicycle.

and Maria provided us with an impeccable, faultless accommodation
after a long, hot ride from the Pyrenees (by
motorcycle, one of our interests too - M&M).
But there is more - their welcome was friendly and warm and
immediately I felt at home and knew it would be very difficult to
leave here. This is a dream come true...
Maria, Mike, extended
family, both animal and human, thank you so much for the stories, the
laughter, the friendship you spread about. I so hope we will have the
opportunity to continue what has been started.
We've had a
great stay, we just wish it could have been longer... we both look
forward to seeing you again soon in the not too distant future. Fond
regards and grateful thanks.
Reading. June 2010
Thank you for
the peace and rest here. The work and love you have put into La
Petite Gravelle makes it a home for all who come - a true sanctuary
Although the weather was not the best we did all the
things we wanted to, visiting many places from La Rochelle to
Angouleme, enjoying enormously the fine china at the museum in La
Rochelle and unexpectedly a wonderful Japanese doll exhibition at the
Jersey. Early May 2010
is a real pleasure to be able to write so enthusiastically about our
stay at La Petite Gravelle… with many visits to France
already behind us we had, like so many others these days, found
ourselves disappointed with accommodation, location and poor service
on too many occasions. Our holiday at La Petite Gravelle proved
to be a wonderful experience… every day was all we wanted it to be,
it was everything we had hoped for and more.
Mike and Maria could not have given
us more or cared more to ensure that we had the perfect holiday.
The location and accommodation were everything we had hoped for and
it was a real treat to be introduced to the other 'residents' – the
ducks, chickens and, of course, the dogs and puppies. What an
idyllic life! We were so jealous.
Bristol. September 2009
you for a warm welcome and lovely stay. We have really enjoyed our
relaxing break and will certainly miss the peace and quiet. The
Gite was perfect and we loved every minute of it…
perfect location for sightseeing by car. No more than a hour to La
Rochelle, Rochefort half an hour and Saintes also half an hour –
with a range of shops and back streets where you can spend the whole
day. A trip to Melle for the silver mine and herb garden make a nice change.
Southsea. August 2009
came to La Petite Gravelle on our honeymoon hoping for an idyllic

exactly what we found. The cottage is peaceful, beautiful and homely.
very much enjoyed our trips to Saintes and St Jean d’Angely, our
bike ride to Varaize and sunbathing in the courtyard with Charlie the
cat, and the highlight of our trips - the Ile de Re.
thanks for your wonderful hospitality and the fresh vegetables, we
can’t recommend your Gite highly enough. J&A,
